TIM DOWNS, CHIEF OF POLICE
Tim Downs has been a resident of Lake County for forty seven years, living in Gary, Merrillville and currently in Hobart.
Tim began his career in law enforcement on May 28, 1979 with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. His duty assignments have included, Jail Division, Patrol Division, Traffic Division, Tactical Unit and Detective Bureau with specific assignments in General Assignment, Juvenile, Sex Crimes, Burglary, Stolen Auto and Narcotics. Chief Downs has held the ranks of Patrolman, Detective, Sergeant, Deputy Commander, Commander of Investigations and was appointed Chief on January 1, 2011 by Sheriff John Buncich.
Chief Downs attended Calumet College of St. Joseph and is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana. Chief Downs has also attended several specialty schools through the years.
